Poor tournament won by an average side. Big opportunity missed for England with terrible management.

Iceland Austria Hungary Croatia Poland Wales France
You couldn't ask for an easier route to glory and they only managed to win 1 out of 7 matches in 90 minutes.

Poor tournament won by an average side. Big opportunity missed for England with terrible management. Absolute stinker of a tournament. Failure of England made only worse by the fact they have beaten all four semi-finalists in the last 7/8 months. Players were very poor but Hodgson has had a 'mare this summer. I don't think this is a great England team, far from it. But I don't think we'll get many better chances to win a tournament.

What annoys me most about the England situation is that we had a manager out of contract and all the soundings before the tournament was that it was Semi-Final or bust for Hodgson. Yet the FA seemed totally unprepared for the search for a new manager. The FA should have had a shortlist of names already prepared and it should have been a simple process. Work through that list and give any other candidates a week to make contact and throw their names into the hat.
To me the choice is obvious. Sam Allardyce. He's a great manager. He's used to getting great results with the dregs of the Premier League. England are the dregs of the top tier of European national team football. It's the perfect fit. And he's a strong personality. You always know what you are going to get with a Sam Allardyce team. He wouldn't be leading us into a tournament without knowing what his preferred formation or system of play is. And he's strong enough to pick purely on form and not reputation.

Can't argue with the Big Sam argument.
Wouldn't be exciting, wouldn't be fashionable either but he's the standout candidate in a pretty piss poor field. As dull as it may be, I think he would suit international football perfectly. Can't help but think his comments regarding the FA in his recent autobiography might go against him though.

I'd go with Big Sam too. The other contenders are Johnny Foreigner and Steve Bruce. So Big Sam it is then.

Big Sam for me too. We have to get away from this notion that we are as good as the better footballing nations and all we need is the right manager to turn us into winners. We need to accept that we are not technically as good as them and pick players accordingly, playing to a game plan. Look how far Wales got with a great team ethic, loads of graft and one exceptional player. The powers that be still think we are good enough to outplay other teams, when in reality, we are not.
How the fuck Sterling got into that team is beyond me and how he got picked after the first game is even more incredible. He got sold for 49 million, so he must be good has to be the thinking behind it. Hodgson's management was all over the place and the changes he made every game smacked of someone who had no clear plan. He actually thought he could make wholesale changes and beat Slovakia with no problems. The writing was on the wall as soon as we failed to beat a very poor Russia and it was a case of playing catch up from game one. If we can't find a manager that could have negotiated us out of that group as winners, then we may as well give up.
