Laughable that we're taking 2 midfielders in Henderson and Wilshere who are lacking match fitness, ahead of someone who has been consistently very good like Danny Drinkwater.
Most baffling is that Hodgson seems to prefer this diamond formation now, which is fine and I agree with - especially if it incorporates that Tottenham spine of Dier holding and Alli supporting Kane (also Dier dropping into defence to encourage Walker and Rose to bomb forward from full-back). But we've got injury problems at centre-back, both Cahill and Smalling are injury prone plus I'm not convinced with Stones. The only other guy who can drop in at centre-back is Dier, so we need someone to plug that gap if so or if he gets injured himself/suspended. Neither Henderson or Wilshere are as competent in that role as Drinkwater.
I think Hodgson has justified not going for Drinkwater by going with a fifth striker in Sturridge, himself a walking injury disaster and has played 58 minutes for England in almost two years. So we're going in with three injury prone players, who just so happen to be part of the big club brigade.
This diamond formation is ok but we've got to have an alternative, notably something that offers some width. Hodgson will probably argue that Raheem Sterling can play out wide, which he can but he's only just come back from injury himself. If he ends up putting Vardy or Rashford out wide he deserves to be shot having left the inform Andros Townsend at home.
I was really looking forward to this tournament and hopeful of England's chances but the final squad is just a case of the same old same old. Overlooking guys in form for the old guard of Arsenal, Liverpool, Man Utd players who aren't fit/good enough/best fit for the team.
Go on England, surprise me!

Can't argue with that summation. Can't understand taking Wilshere anyway or am I the only person who thinks he's overrated? Unfit Wilshere versus in form, confident and fit Drinkwater. Go figure.

Definitely not the only person who thinks he's overrated.

Nope, i think he's overrated and a bit of a chump. He's also made of glass, so will probably break again if played. I don't rate Sterling either and would have gone for Drinkwater and Townsend.

Definitely not the only person who thinks he's overrated. I don't think Wilshere is overrated. He could be brilliant. He could be right up there with the greatest midfielders that England have ever had. BUT... He's started 3 Premier League games in the last 18 months and played a total of 347 minutes in that time- less than 4 full matches worth of time on the pitch. And to include him we've left Danny Drinkwater at home who has been the unsung hero of Leicester City winning the Premier League. Looking at the England squad I think we could have done with another hardworking & defensive minded central midfielder like Drinkwater in the squad. What happens if Eric Dier gets injured or suspended or we are forced to deploy him as a centre-back? Henderson? Milner? Rooney? I think excluding Drinkwater could turn out to be costly. I would have liked Townsend to have been selected too. He has electric pace and the one thing we've learnt before is defenders hate having someone running at them with his pace- he's got the pace of Aaron Lennon but with some end product too.

I've seen very little to suggest Wilshere is anywhere near as good as that assessment, Golly. That said I've seen so little of him due to his pathetic injury record. He's not useless, he has a nice change of foot and on occasions has stamped his mark on games. Even when fit though he is so inconsistent and goes missing more often than not.
Townsend should also go on form. He's in far better form than the only other quick player we have in Sterling. I like his unpredictability.
Another point about Drinkwater is that he's very good in the air. The friendly he played the other month, I think it was against the Netherlands but I'll happily be corrected, he won everything in the air. Our other midfielders, Dier aside, are shit in the air.
It would have been very interesting if Delph, another Hodgson favourite, hadn't pulled out with injury. Who would he have dropped, Vardy?

If he's fit Wiltshire is ace! Yeah, I remember the 2010/11 season when he was fit.

Probably an obvious thing to say but Wilshire would do well to stay off the fags and booze.
